During the 20th century quite a lot of astronomers compiled lists of specific types of objects, amongst them:
- George Ogden Abell: the Abell Catalog of Planetary Nebulae (1966) containing 86 entries, discovered mostly by Wilson , Harrington and Minkowski. Abbreviation: Abell.
- Sven Cederblad: Catalog of bright diffuse Galactic nebulae (1946) contains 330 galactic nebulae. Abbreviation: Ced.
- Stewart Sharpless: a list of galactic HII-emission nebulae, first published in 1953 (Sh1) and updated in 1959 (Sh2) for a total of 313 objects (mostly based on plates from the National Geographic - Palomar Observatory Sky Survey). Abbreviation: Sh2.
- James Emerson Barnard: Catalogue of Dark Markings in the Sky. First publihed in 1919, the posthumously published definitive list of 1927 contains 369 so called dark galactic nebulae, most of them identified on his stunning photo’s of the Milky Way. Abbreviation: B.
- Beverly Lynds: Catalogue of Dark Nebulae (1962), containing 1791 dark nebulae, compiled from red and blue plates taken for the National Geographic - Palomar Observatory Sky Survey. Abbreviation: LDN.
