In 1888 the Danish astronomer John Louis Emil Dryer published his New General Catalogue of Nebulae and Clusters of Stars (NGC). It contains 7840 objects, many now known to be galaxies but at the time described as nebulae. The list is mostly a compilation of previous work, notably by William and Caroline Hershel, James Dunlop and John Hershel (who’s General Catalogue of Nebulae and Clusters of Stars, GC, had previously been supplemented by Dreyer).
